Identity

Two circles. One offset, one open.

The mark is a form and the second light cast on it: a solid disc with an open one shifted across. It holds at 16px, works in one colour, and reads the same knocked out of black. This page is the reference for using it.

01 — The mark

Primary mark
Grid
40 × 40 units. Everything scales from it.
Circles
Two, equal radius of 10.5 units, centred on the horizontal midline.
Offset
10 units between centres, just under one radius, so the ring cuts the disc.
Ring
1.6 unit stroke at 40. Thicken it at small sizes: 2 at 26px, 2.4 at 16px.
Clear space
Keep one radius clear on every side.

Index Labs Software, and the research behind it. Instrument Sans
Family
Instrument Sans, by Rodrigo Fuenzalida and Jordan Egstad. Open source, on Google Fonts.
Wordmark
Medium (500), tracked at −0.022em, set at 0.68× the mark's height.
Headings
Regular (400), tracked between −0.03em and −0.035em as size grows.
Body
Regular at 15.5 to 16.5px, line height 1.6.
Labels
Medium, uppercase, tracked at 0.09 to 0.14em. No second family.
Chinese
Chinese text uses the system sans (PingFang, Noto Sans CJK) with no tracking; Latin stays in Instrument Sans.

05 — Usage

Do

  • Use the mark in ink and accent on paper, or knocked out on ink.
  • Use the mono version wherever only one colour is available.
  • Keep one radius of clear space around it.
  • Pair it with the wordmark in Instrument Sans Medium.

Don't

  • Change the offset, the radii or the ring weight.
  • Fill the ring or outline the disc.
  • Recolour the ring outside the accent pair.
  • Rotate it, add effects, or set it smaller than 16px.

Lockup files have the wordmark outlined, so they need no font installed. PNGs are 1024px marks and 2000px lockups on transparent.
